What Is Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC)?
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of:
- Service members who died while on active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training
- Veterans who died as a result of a service-connected injury or disease
- Veterans who did not die as a result of a service-connected injury or disease, but were completely disabled by a service-connected disability:
- For at least 10 years before death
- Since their release from active duty and for at least five years before death
- For at least one year before death, if they were a former prisoner of war and died after Sept. 30, 1999
Who Is Eligible for DIC?
You may be eligible for DIC benefits if you are a surviving spouse who:
- Married a service member who died on active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training,
- Married the deceased veteran before Jan. 1, 1957
- Married a veteran who died from a service-connected injury or disease, as long as the marriage began within 15 years of discharge
- Married the deceased veteran for at least one year
- Had a child with the veteran and cohabitated with the veteran until their death
If you are a surviving child, you must be under 18 or between the ages of 18 and 23 and currently attending school. You may be eligible for DIC if the veteran parent:
- Died in the line of duty
- Died as a result of a service-connected injury or disease
If you are a surviving parent, you may be eligible for DIC if the veteran child:
- Died in the line of duty
- Died as a result of a service-connected injury or disease

2020 DIC Rates for Spouses & Dependents
Depending on when your loved one died, you may be entitled to certain compensation payments. You won’t have to pay taxes on these payments because they are tax exempt. If the veteran died on or after January 1, 1993, the following information applies:
Monthly Payment
- Surviving dependent child of a veteran when they have no surviving spouse: $565.84
- Surviving spouse: $1,340.14
Added Amounts
- If the Veteran had a VA disability rating of totally disabling (including for individual unemployability) for at least the 8 full years leading up to their death, and you were married to the Veteran for those same 8 years, you may qualify for the 8-year provision benefit which equals $284.57 added to your monthly compensation
- If you have a disability and need help with regular daily activities (like eating, bathing, or dressing), you may qualify for the Aid and Attendance benefit which equals $332.00 added to your monthly compensation
- If you can’t leave your house due to a disability, you may qualify for the Housebound allowance benefit which equals $155.53 added to your monthly compensation
- If you have 1 or more children who are under age 18, you may qualify for the Transitional benefit and DIC apportionment rate which equals an added monthly total of $286.00 for the first 2 years after the Veteran’s death and $332.00 for each eligible child.
